Which goes first, the Paci or the Swaddler?

Dear Baby B,

You are my high-needs child. You require many things to go to sleep and stay asleep including your pacifier, a tight swaddle, and rocking.

You are five months old my dear. It is time to grow up. It is time to learn how to fall asleep without these things because I am tired, tired, tired of sticking that pacifier back in your mouth over, and over, and over again through the night. And Lord help me if that swaddle isn't tight enough and you manage to get your arms out. Then you will grab the pacifier with your fingers and pull it out of your mouth.

So which goes first, the Paci or the Swaddler?

Today in the car you fell asleep without the pacifier in your mouth. You cried for about 10 minutes and then you did your little humming/grunting thing and fell asleep. Mama thinks it is time to let you cry it out. As much as it breaks my heart, I must get some sleep dear. And I know you can do it. You have on occasion gotten yourself back to sleep without the pacifier.

That's it. Tonight we will have 30 minutes of quiet time in your room before bed. I will get you settled and swaddled. I will even rock you for a bit. But you are going down in your bed, drowsy but awake, and if you must cry, you must.

BUT YOU ARE NOT GETTING THAT PACIFIER.

Love,

Mommy

PS - We'll work on the Swaddler next week.

Good luck! My 19 month old still needs his paci to go to sleep. And I swaddled him until he was 8 months old.

I was desperate for sleep.

I agree... Lea can sleep w/o the paci...but we still swaddle her! I read that you should swaddle with one arm out for awhile, then both arms and then no swaddle. Let me know how it goes!

I was so thankful that my daughter used her thumb and my son didn't do either a pacifier or thumb! I couldn't imagine having to wake up to replace a "binky"! You can do it, Erin. I send up a silent prayer of support.

WOW, weaning from the paci at 5 months?? You are brave! My daughter slept swaddled until almost 7 months, and she still takes the paci (only at night, though, and NEVER out of her crib!) at 15 months. I'm terrified to wean her from it. You rock!!!

Stopping by from MBC. Ahhh - good luck with Cry it Out, hated doing it with my daughter but it's something you have to do for your own sanity sometimes.

Oooooooooooh I feel your pain, I so very much do. My youngest was a swaddling paci sucking rocking never leave your arms or I'll wake up and scream demon. However tired I was, I tried to just keep in mind how lucky I was that he was healthy (his two older brothers were not so lucky, but we're blessed to have them) ... It took several months of him to sleep out of my arms, in his crib, without being in the baby straight-jacket ... and the paci, well, that still lingers. Now I miss those days of cuddling him because at 16 months tomorrow, he is VERY independent and not very cuddly at all :( Thanks for stopping by my blog :D

Oh how did it work? I REALLY want to know cuz I'm comptemplating stopping the paci myself! I leave one of Hunter's arms free of his swaddle but then roughly yanks his paci out of his mouth. he doesn't do it during the night, THANK GAWD, but he is doing it during naptime now. I've had a pure hellish week with the boy who won't nap longer than 10-15 minutes and then wakes up screaming. And I tried to let him CIO a little bit and I ended up crying MYSELF. This is torture!!
